Computer clean up and dust removal
Keeping your computer free of viruses is one thing, keeping the dust out is another! If your computer is a year old or older, consider getting the dust cleaned out from the inside. Dust can clog the vents required to cool your computer and to keep it performing well.
Quick PC recommends a clean up every 6 to 12 months depending on usage, and the environment that the computer is in. If the computer is in a carpeted rooms and furry animals are present, your computer will require more frequent cleanings.
A tell tale sign of a clogged vent would be loud fans. The computer tries to compensate the lack of air flow by making the fans spin faster. So if your PC sounds like it is about to take off in flight, this may be your problem.
Cleaning a computer can be done in a few simple steps:
- Turning off the computer and unplug every cable attached to it (mark them if necessary so you plug them back into the same place)
- For laptops, take the battery out.
- For desktops, unscrew the side panel, and remove it. Some require you to pull a lever or push a button to release the panel. Other computers come apart into two pieces – see your users manual on opening these cases.
- Take a can of compressed air ($5 at your local store) and blow out any dust you see. Pay particular attention to vents, and heat sinks (large pieces of metal that dissipate heat).
- Close the case, re-attach cables and batteries
